• Gas from gas network

  Natural gas in the gas network can be mixed with green gas to make the supply of gas more sustainable. What percentage green gas will be used in the national gas network? Does your country have sufficient bio resources to make the gas?

  Natural gas
  This slider sets the percentage of all gas used is natural gas. Natural gas is a relatively clean fossil fuel that is mostly used to generate heat and electricity. It is hardly used as a transport fuel yet.
  Apart from CO₂ emissions gas combustion also tends to produce NO_x.
  Green gas
  This slider sets what percentage of all gas used is green gas. Green gas is biogas that has been upgraded to natural gas quality. It can be fed into the gas mains. Biogas is conventionally produced by bacteria that digest biological material. In the future, such gas may be produced by 'gasification' of biomass.

• Fuel for coal plants

  The fuel mix of your coal plants can be made greener by co-firing biocoal. Wood pellets are co-fired by building dedicated plants under 'Renewable electricity'.

  Coal
  Coal is the most CO₂ intensive of all fossil fuels. For that reason, governments promote and subsidize replacing a part of coal for electricity production by biomass alternatives.
  Biocoal
  Bio-coal is a fuel with properties sufficiently similar to coal that it be used as a substitute. It is made by torrefaction of woody biomass.
  
  Torrefaction of biomass occurs at temperatures of several hundred ℃ in the absence of oxygen.

• Fuel for gas plants

  The fuel mix for your gas-fired plants can be made greener by co-firing bio-oil.

  Gas from gas network
  Gas-fired power plants obtain their gas from the gas mains, of course. Some of this gas may be green gas, if you have set this to be the case.
  Alternatively, gas-fired plants can co-fire oil and bio-oil.
  Bio-oil
  This slider sets what percentage of fuel for large gas-powered plants is bio-oil . The oil is injected into the furnace as a fine mist together with the gas. In theory, it is possible to substitute 100% of the gas in this way without losing efficiency. In practice, considerably less than 100% is co-fired in such plants.
  The sustainability of bio-oil has been in dispute for a couple of years now, and its popularity has declined strongly. Future international regulation of bio-oil production may mean bio-oil will be used more often.
  
  At the bottom of each page, you can see how much arable land you need world-wide to grow all the required biomass.
  Oil
  This slider sets what percentage of the total input consists of oil-derivatives that are 'co-fired' in large gas powered plants. The oil is injected into the furnace as a fine mist together with the gas. In theory, it is possible to substitute 100% of the gas in this way without losing efficiency. In practice less than the theoretical maximum is co-fired in such plants.
